Why does silver tarnish?
Silver reacts with sulphur in the air, and with moisture, sweat, perfume and some cosmetics. Over time this forms a dark layer called tarnish. It is natural and does not damage the metal, but good care slows it down a lot. Many of our pieces also have an anti-tarnish finish.
Everyday wear
- Last on, first off: put your jewellery on after perfume, lotion, hairspray and make-up, and take it off before you shower, swim or exercise.
- Avoid water and chemicals: chlorine, sea water, cleaning products and sweat speed up tarnish and can dull plating.
- Wear it often: gentle, regular wear actually helps keep silver bright.
Cleaning
- After each wear, wipe your piece gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove oils and moisture.
- For a deeper clean, use a silver polishing cloth on plain silver only.
- Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and harsh dips. They can scratch the surface and damage plating, enamel and stones.
- For gold or rose gold-plated pieces, enamel work or pieces with pearls and gemstones, only wipe gently with a soft dry cloth.
Storage
- Store each piece separately in a pouch or lined box so pieces do not scratch each other.
- Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from bathrooms and humidity.
- An airtight zip pouch or an anti-tarnish strip in your jewellery box helps slow tarnish.
- Fasten chains and bracelets before storing to prevent tangles.
Caring for plated, enamelled and stone-set pieces
