Instead, the cost depends on a few clear factors. Here is what shapes the price of custom fine jewellery, and how the process works at our Mumbai studio.
1. The metal
Most bespoke fine jewellery is made in 18K gold (yellow, white or rose) or platinum. Gold prices change daily with the market, so the metal cost is calculated at the time of your order. Platinum is denser and usually costs more than gold for the same design.
2. The weight of the piece
A delicate pendant may use only a couple of grams of gold, while a bold bangle can use fifty grams or more. The size, thickness and structure of your design decide the metal weight, and this is often the biggest part of the cost.
3. Diamonds
- Natural or lab-grown: lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same sparkle and hardness, and generally cost less than natural diamonds of the same size and quality.
- The 4Cs: carat weight, colour, clarity and cut all affect the price.
- Shape: round, heart, pear, radiant or baguette cuts are priced differently.
4. Coloured gemstones
Emeralds, sapphires, tourmalines, aquamarines and other gemstones vary widely in price depending on their type, origin, size and quality. A fine Zambian emerald, for example, is priced very differently from a small accent stone.
5. Design complexity and craftsmanship
Intricate settings, convertible designs (such as one ring that can be worn in several styles), fine detailing and hand finishing all add making time and skill to your piece.
6. Certification and finishing
Hallmarking of gold and certification of diamonds and gemstones give you confidence in what you are buying, and are part of a transparent quote.
